Study guide overview

The study guide is divided into five parts:

Part I covers the role of the notary in a civil law system generally. It furnishes a concise yet thorough discussion of the civil law in Louisiana. Then it summarizes the role of the notary in Louisiana.

Part II discusses Louisiana’s court system, the sources of law and legal authorities, the public–records doctrine, and exhaustively treats the office of notary public in Louisiana under current law.

Part III covers Louisiana Civil Code principles relevant to the functions and duties of notaries in this state. An understanding of these principles is necessary for any official charged with giving legal effect to the acts of the citizens of Louisiana made in conformity with the civilian and commercial laws of the state.

Part IV surveys the spectrum of notarial transactions the Louisiana notary is authorized to undertake, from administering oaths, conducting a public inventory, to drafting juridical acts of all kinds.

Part V provides an extensive glossary, the full text of Louisiana’s notary public law, and detailed information about the notary public examination.
